Phonics
At Wicklewood Primary School we use Read Write Inc for our phonics scheme.
Like all phonics schemes, it teaches children the sounds in English, the letters that represent them, and how to form the letters when writing.
Read Write Inc Phonics includes reading books written using only the letters they have learnt at each level and a small number of separately taught tricky words (words we have to remember and recognise that we can't sound out), referred to as 'red words in the Read Write Inc Phonics scheme. The children will quickly feel confident and successful.
Here you can find lots of free resources including short films to support your child’s learning.
Helping your child practice the craft of phonics at home.
There are 3 main elements to the craft of phonics that your child needs to master by the end of Year 1:
- Learning all set 1, set 2 and 3 sounds and being able to identify them in words. This includes those sounds that are made with singular letters and special friends where 2 or 3 letters sit together in a word to make one sound. These are more formally known as digraphs (2 letters to make one sound) and trigraphs (3 letters to make one sound.
- Being able to segment a word into the individual sounds. (known as Fred Talk in our Read Write Inc phonics programme).
- Being able to blend words to read accurately.
Use the links below to access Read Write Inc ‘Word Challenges’. Children can practise the ‘Special Friends’, and ‘Fred Talk’ routine with a mix of real and nonsense words containing Set 1 and 2 sounds. The children are familiar with this routine in phonics sessions at school. They begin by identifying any ‘special friends’ in the words, next Fred talking the word (segmenting) and then saying the word (blending). Join your child in doing these sessions to help them practice. Links to each session are provided below. They take no more than 5 minutes and can form part of your 5 times a week reading practice. We would love you to record in their reading record books when you have done this.

Phonics games:
There are some great games that you can also use if you have access to a tablet or computer with your child. These will also allow your child to practice reading ‘real’ and ‘nonsense’ or often known as ‘alien’ words with your child. It is important that you focus on reading the nonsense words as much as the real words in order to practice the craft of phonics with your child.
Phonics Play ‘Picnic on Pluto’. Feed Obb the alien words and Bob the real!
Phonics Play ‘Dragons Den’. The dragons eggs have got all mixed up. The green dragons eggs have real words on and the red dragon nonsense words. Help to sort them.
Phonics Play ‘Buried Treasure’. Drag the coins with real words on to the treasure chest and the nonsense words on to the trash.
Phonics Play ‘Sentence substitution’. A good game for applying your child’s blending skills.
Phonics Bloom ‘Flash Cards pirate ships’. Say the right sounds on the pirate ship flags to score points.
Flash Cards (Phase 3) - Online Phonics Game
Phonics Bloom ‘Phonics Frog’. Help Phonics Frog get back home by segmenting and blending the words on his log.
Phonics Frog (Phase 3) - Online Phonics Game
Phonics Bloom ‘Flash card time trial’. How many sounds can you say out loud before the time runs out? Beat the timer!

Understanding phonics This short film will help you to understand what phonics is.
How to say the sounds This video helps us all with ensuring we use the correct pronunciation for each sound. You can use this film alongside your child to check that mouth and lips are formed correctly when making the sound. Is it a 'bouncy' sound or a 'stretchy' one!
10 things to think about when you read to your child Reading to your child at home is crucial as you are their main role-model for understanding the purpose, joy and wonder we can get from books. Check out this video to help think about how you can support their development in reading when you are reading to them.
